The WA Agricultural Research Collaboration (WAARC) team was thrilled to announce its inaugural cohort of 23 postgraduate scholarship students on 26 July at The Maali, overlooking Perth Zoo’s beautiful gardens.
Thank you to all WAARC members, industry partners and stakeholders who joined us in celebrating Western Australia’s next generation of talented agricultural scientists.
WAARC scholarship recipient Heidi Mippy and her daughter Annali Mippy-Smith gave a moving Welcome to Country including a traditional dance performed by Annali.
Special thanks to Minister for Agriculture and Food Jackie Jarvis for congratulating the scholarship students and presenting them with certificates.
A big shout-out to our three inspiring guest speakers – Dr Jo Wisdom from Grower Group Alliance, Dr Gaus Azam from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), and Dr Hayley Norman from CSIRO.
They generously shared their own PhD journeys and insights including how their postgraduate studies had opened doors throughout their careers.
Our guest speakers’ advice to the students included embracing opportunities to work in multi-disciplinary teams and with farmers and industry as much as possible to generate impactful research ideas.
The excitement, optimism and collaboration in the room were captured beautifully through the lens of photographer Michael Goh from Key2 Creative.
Agricultural innovation, research and development looks bright given the talent of our round 1 scholarship students and their diverse research topics.
We look forward to seeing the innovations and outcomes of their research.
