Hi all,
Western Australia’s mining sector has helped shape our economy and regional communities for generations. But as mines approach closure across the State, an important question emerges: what comes next for these landscapes and the communities connected to them?
Late last year, WAARC partnered with the Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME) to explore one possible answer – how rehabilitated mine land could transition into productive, sustainable agricultural systems. The Mineland to Farmland workshop, held in December 2025, brought together more than 60 stakeholders spanning mining, agriculture, research, First Nations organisations, water management, ecological restoration and regional development.
The goal was ambitious but necessary: to move beyond rehabilitation as an end point and instead consider post-mining land as an opportunity to create new economic, environmental and social value for Western Australia.
Guided and documented by regional strategy specialists agdots, the workshop outcomes were captured in the Mineland to Farmland report – a roadmap that distils diverse expertise into a practical, shared vision for the State’s post‑mining future. Drawing on their deep experience working alongside regional industries and communities, agdots translated the collective insights, priorities and opportunities identified by participants into a clear pathway for future action.
Warm regards,
