WAARC hosted its Confidence in Communication Workshop at The Hub, Bentley Technology Park on 13 April 2026, bringing together postgraduate students for an engaging and practical professional development experience.
The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for participants to strengthen the communication skills essential to agricultural research.
Through a series of interactive activities – including panel and poster sessions, elevator pitches, presentations, radio interviews and navigating challenging conversations – students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and apply their learning in real-world scenarios.
A key focus of the day was helping participants translate complex research into clear, confident and impactful messages.
The workshop was led by WAARC Capacity Building and Extension Program Lead Jenny Crisp, whose thoughtful approach continues to support the development of WAARC’s postgraduate cohort.
Participants also benefited from the expertise of an outstanding group of industry coaches, who generously shared their insights and experience:
- Kate Forrester (ABC Rural)
- Esther Price (Bluesee Consultancy)
- Andrew Huffer (Andrew Huffer and Associates)
- Dr Bronwyn Clarke (Murdoch University & WA Livestock Research Council)
- Dr Kelly Pearce (WA Agricultural Research Collaboration)
- Professor Caroline Jacobson (Murdoch University)
- Professor Sarita Bennett (Curtin University)
The workshop reinforced that confidence in communication is developed through preparation, practice and a willingness to try. It also highlighted the importance of storytelling and clear messaging – not only for research careers, but across all professional contexts.
These skills will continue to support participants in their everyday work, and as they prepare for the WAARC PhD Showcase later this year.
Thank you to everyone who brought curiosity, openness and positive energy to the day. Strong communication skills are not an optional extra – they are essential at every stage of our lives and careers.
